Slow Food Galway and NUI Galway Organic Garden Society – Working together

The NUI Galway Organic Garden Society recently hosted a number of talks during Green Week at the university. One of the talks was by Professor Leslie Duram who gave a lecture on “Local, Organic and Sustainable Food”. 

Dr. Leslie A. Duram is Professor and Chair of the Department of Geography and Environmental Resources at Southern Illinois University at
Carbondale. Her book Good Growing: Why Organic Farming Works was published by the University of Nebraska Press in 2005.  Based on case study organic farms in California, Colorado, Illinois, Florida and New York, her book is an analysis of the social, economic, policy, and ecological factors that influence organic agriculture.

Her second book:  The Encyclopedia of Organic, Sustainable and Local Food will be published in December 2009 by ABC-Clio/Praeger. It includes over 150 topics that are relevant to current issues in organic food and farming. Dr. Duram is currently working as a Fulbright Scholar in the Department of Geography at the National University of Ireland Galway.

Following the lecture refreshments were provided by
Slow Food Galway. Almost 50 people enjoyed a selection of soup, breads, hummus, scones, jam, chutney, Irish raw milk cheeses, chocolate cake and tarts all provided by the local members.

 NUI Galway Organic Garden Society and Slow Food Galway have collaborated in various other ventures and maintain close links with one another, for example, 20 members of the Organic Garden Society joined in on the Mushroom hunt hosted by Slow Food Galway in Clonbur last Autumn.

The NUI Galway Organic Garden Society meets every Thursday between 1 and 2 in the NUI Galway Organic Garden on Distillery Road – everyone is welcome to come along.
